What is Omicron?
The Omicron variant, which was first reported in South Africa and classified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a Variant of Concern, has since spread to more than 50 countries worldwide. The variant has over 30 mutations in the spike protein, thereby affecting its binding to human cells and resulting in immune escape. This makes the variant more infectious and may reduce the efficacy of current vaccines.
Why is there a need for a PCR detection kit?
Most commercial PCR kits remain effective in detecting Omicron but are unable to differentiate this variant specifically from the rest. To confirm if a positive case has been infected by Omicron, next-generation sequencing (NGS) is necessary which usually takes between 24 to 96 hours to generate results. Many countries do not have ready access to NGS.
ProTect™ Omivar RT-qPCR Kit

Accurate detection of the Omicron variant
The ProTect™ Omivar RT-qPCR test is a nucleic acid test that identifies the Omicron variant from other SARS-CoV-2 variants, using nasopharyngeal or oropharyngeal swabs and tested on reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Known as the gold standard method, it provides high sensitivity and specificity to detect down to 15 copies of the variant. The test targets Omicron mutation genes to ensure accurate and specific detection of the variant now all in one reaction!
